Cardiff City Areas
Cardiff is a diverse city with varied districts, each with distinct characteristics. If you're travelling to Cardiff for a particular event you want to be situated close to, this may of course impact on your decision about where to stay. If you simply want to be close to the main attractions, you will be able to enjoy a good level of choice. Cardiff, like any major city, has areas which are characterised by retail, business and culture.
Cardiff Bay
Part of South Cardiff, Cardiff Bay has undergone lots of regeneration over the years. This is a very diverse part of Cardiff and has been for generations, forming as it has a crucial part in the city's history. There are some remarkable buildings in Cardiff Bay, including St David's Hotel, the Pierhead, the Welsh National Assembly (the Senedd) and the Millennium Centre. Mermaid Quay is one of the most appealing sectors of Cardiff Bay, home to a wide array of shops and places to eat, drink and party, overlooking the water.
The water itself is a key element in the appeal of Cardiff Bay, with the Wetlands Reserve a haven for nature and wildlife. The waterbus and barrage also draw people here, as they offer unique ways to enjoy the city's waterways. Cardiff Sailing Centre is also here, so if you're into boating you may wish to head in this direction.
Cardiff City Centre
The city centre is a real hub for business and retail. The River Taff runs along this part of the city to its west. The main shopping streets are St Mary's and Queen Street, containing everything from big high street names to exclusive designer boutiques and individual shops.
Castle Quarter
The Castle Quarter of the city centre is one of the premier commercial areas, and has also recently undergone much development. This part of the city is home to some gorgeous arcades dating back to Edwardian and Victorian times, including Duke Street, High Street and Castle Arcades. Cardiff Castle lies within this area, a mix of medieval, Roman, Norman and Gothic ingredients. Bute Park is also in this region, a lovely park with thriving wildlife and greenery, plus the River Taff in the backdrop. Other notable features in the Castle Quarter include the Animal Wall, a remarkable listed sculpture. Cardiff Central Market is also in this area, dating back to the 18th century.
East City Centre
The eastern reaches of the city centre include Newport Road and Dumfries Way. This area is known partly for business and education, many of the university's properties being here. Churchill Way is also in this district, characterised by some striking apartment developments.
The Hayes
The Hayes lies to the south west of the city centre, and is one of the city's major commercial focal points. As well as having excellent shopping facilities, this area is also famous for having been featured in Doctor Who! Particular areas of interest here include the Central Library, St David's Hall, the beguiling cafe quarter and the remarkable Alliance sculpture.
