Sport in Cardiff
Cardiff is associated with many things, and sport is certainly one of them, not just on account of its status as the Welsh capital but also in its own right. Whether you're a spectator or like to get involved, you'll find more enthusiasm for sport in Cardiff than pretty much anywhere else in the country.
Cardiff City Stadium
Cardiff City Stadium acts as both a sport and concert venue. Cardiff City Football Club are based here, a team with a long history going back as far as the end of the 19th century. If you're a football fan, this is the place to catch an exciting match on a Saturday afternoon.
Cardiff Arms Park
Cardiff Arms Park functions mainly as a rugby union venue, and has a city centre location. The stadium has a long history within British sport, and has hosted events in such diverse sports as baseball, athletics and boxing.
Maindy Centre
The Maindy Centre includes both a swimming pool and a cycle track. Set within the Maindy district of the city, this place has long serviced British sports, having played a role at the Commonwealth Games in the 1950s.
Sport Wales National Centre
The national centre for Sport Wales is run by the team for sports development within the whole country. Sports provided within the centre include football, gymnastics, badminton and netball among many others.
Cardiff Arena
Cardiff Arena acts as the venue for multiple ice based events including ice hockey and skating. The Cardiff Devils team are based here, and it has hosted lots of major championship events.
Cardiff International Sports Stadium
Cardiff International Sports Stadium has only been open since 2009, but is a major sporting centre for athletics, as well as a popular place for business and conferencing services.
National Indoor Athletics Centre
Set within the university, the National Indoor Athletics Centre is dedicated to track and field athletics, with state of the art facilities.
Cardiff International Sports Village
Cardiff International Sports Village forms a major element in the city's extensive regeneration program. Facilities within the development include a pool and ice rink. The village also provides kayaking and canoeing activities. The project is still under development, but will ultimately facilitate multiple different types of sporting activity.
Fitness Facilities
You might be lucky enough to be staying at a hotel with sports and fitness facilities in house, particularly if you're staying at a quality hotel. If this is not the case, you'll be pleased to know that Cardiff has lots of public fitness venues. Among the major centres are Fairwater Leisure Centre, Channel View, Pentwyn Leisure Centre, the Star Centre and Western Leisure Centre. These venues provide a range of facilities, including football, badminton, netball and of course gyms.
If you like to keep active but don't feel like getting involved in the local facilities, the areas around Cardiff are well placed to host you, from boating around Cardiff Bay to setting off towards the coast for some surfing or hill climbing.
